Fairbanks Wedding - Annie & Lennie

On Saturday I headed up towards Fairbanks to shoot Annie and Lennie's wedding at the Silver Gulch Brewery located in Fox, just north of town. What an amazing place to shoot! I hadn't been there before but loved all the textures and colors and cool backgrounds to work with. They gave me a bunch of time with the two of them so getting the goods was easy. They were also totally in love and cute together which made things easy. I think you can see it in the way they interact. All day the lighting was perfect. There's something different about northern latitude light that you won't find anywhere else. It's much whiter and more pure and makes for distinct photos. We get it in Anchorage too but I've always noticed it being a little more brilliant in Fairbanks and past the Arctic Circle. One of the things I thought was cool is that Lennie gets two honeymoons - one with Annie and one with the guys on a hunting trip. I don't know how he worked that out with Annie but good job!

Dave & Alison's Big Flyout Trip

What a cool trip we just did! The day after Alison and Dave's wedding my climbing buddy Bryan and I teamed up to help them plan a mega-sweet 4-day flying/camping/hiking/fishing/rafting trip for them and 8 of their friends. We flew out of Lake Hood in both an Otter and a Beaver on floats and landed out at Carmen lake at the end of the Twentymile River. The flight out was under sunny skies and the weather was warm and perfect. The next few days were spent eating lots of really good food, making a long and tedious bushwhack through a devils club forest to see the glacial lake 2 miles away, catching dolly vardon and trout from the lake, hiking along the lake, playing bocce ball, and finally the last day ended with a cold and wet float down the Twentymile River to the Seward Highway where we were picked up and shuttled back to Anchorage. I think the group had a "real" Alaskan experience and it was fun for Bryan and I to share our version of an Alaska Vacation. If any of our future brides or grooms would like to plan a trip like this for their friends, let us know and we'll get the logistics lined up! You'll have a good time for sure, see the pictures for proof!

Girdwood Wedding - Alison & Dave

On Saturday I was down in Girdwood for Alison and Dave's big destination wedding to Alaska. They had all their friends and family fly up because they wanted to do something different - and everyone had already been to all the "usual" destination wedding locations like Hawaii and Mexico. The Crow Creek Mine is super cool place to photograph because of all the historic buildings and beautiful scenery. It was quite a party and one of the wildest groups I've seen in a long time. They totally lived it up and had a good time though! They also had one of the biggest cake attacks on each other I've ever seen, evidence can be found in the two photos below. It was close to violent..! The day after the wedding a group from the wedding did a fly out camp/hike/raft trip; see the next most recent post for that. -Joe

T-Traverse Ski/Climb

On Sunday Bryan and I started a 4 day, 30 mile traverse we ended up calling the "T-Traverse" because it's major crux was Transcendence Pass, which was more of a peak climb than a pass. We decided most climbers would agree it doesn't fit the normal image of a pass which is generally an easier way between two higher/steeper points. Instead it was the same steepness as the higher/steeper points but a little lower in elevation. Anyway, the trip went great with 4 days of bluebird skies and 50-60 degree temps. Bryan was sick the whole time so we didn't do anything too crazy, and now that I am back home I have gotten sick too. Thanks for getting me sick Bryan. We hung out at the Pichlers Perch hut all day Tuesday, laying in the grass and soaking in the sun. Ate lots and read all the old climber's journals from the hut. On Wednesday we got up at 5:00am so we could travel down the glacier to Eklutna Lake while the snow was still hard and frozen. Travelling on wet, warm snow during the heat of the day gives you a higher chance of falling into a crevasse. We had no problems but saw lots of crevasses. Last week Bryan rode his mountain bike out to the end of the lake with mine strapped to his back so we could ride back to the car rather than carry our 60 pound packs another 10 miles. The bike ride only took 55 minutes and we celebrated by getting Philly Cheese steak sandwiches at the Birchwood Saloon, which is sort of a motorcycle gang bar but has awesome philly's.The route went as follows: Eagle River area to Ram Valley, through Bombardment Pass down to the Peters Creek Valley, up to the headwaters of Peter's Creek and up Transcendence Pass, down onto unnamed glacier, down to West Branch Eklutna Glacier, over to East Branch to Pichler's Perch, down East Branch to the Lake and mountain bike to the car.
As always, my point and shoot doesn't capture the true beauty of the area like a bigger camera might, but I hate carrying an extra 5 pounds when I already have so much..

Glen Alps Engagement Shoot - Maribel & Luis

On monday morning I met with Maribel and her mom to discuss Chugach Peaks photographing Maribel's wedding with Luis this July. At one point Maribel asked how soon we could do the engagement shoot. I said, "well, we could do it right now if Luis was here!" They were eager to get some photos for the invitations so sure enough, a few hours after I met and signed them up, Maribel called and asked if they could come back up in an hour to get their engagement photos taken. They did and here they are..!

Anchorage Wedding - Johnele & Anthony

On Saturday I photographed Johnele and Anthony's wedding at the Railroad Depot at the airport. Before the ceremony, we actually drove down the Seward Highway to Potter's Marsh to do some photos. It was a perfect day for photos and Johnele was willing to walk through mud and volcanic ash dust with her dress to get the photos. When we got back to the depot they were married on the stairs with all their friends and family circled around the railings. I think it's cool to do it that way because everyone has a nice unobstructed view of the whole ceremony.

Byron Peak Climb

On Friday Bryan and I exhausted ourselves and did an awesome 12 hour roundtrip climb of Byron Peak, the west summit specifically (there are two, and the east is a little more boring in winter). There's a massive high pressure sitting over Alaska now so it was crystal clear with light winds. Temps were around 50-60 all day which is great. The route takes you up the Byron Glacier and to the summit at 4590 feet. We only encountered 3 or 4 crevasses, but come summer when all the snow melts, the glacier is a maze of giant crevasses. Luckily we had a good snow year and most of the holes were plugged and we encountered no problems other than running out of water. When we got to the bottom we gorged ourselves on fresh snowmelt water and then stopped in Girdwood for the obligatory milk and powedered donuts run. A good day for sure!
Check out the beauty.. and adventure.. and B-Ryan.
